Join us for an evening of conversation and networking around the theme of mentorship. How can individuals working in the environmental field support each other? This question is of particular importance given the current economic downturn; the work we do is as important as ever, yet there seem to be fewer clear career opportunities. We can all benefit from hearing the experiences of others: their successes, their biggest obstacles, and what they have learned along the way. We can inspire others with our own stories. No matter what level of experience or career success we've reached, we can all be mentors.
A light dinner consisting of vegetarian appetizers and finger foods will be served. Coffee and water will also be available. $18.00
July Outdoor Event: Hunt for Fossils in St. Paul
Location: 950 Lilydale Road, St Paul, MN 55118
Join FWEF at Lilydale Regional Park to hunt for fossils. About 450 millions years ago, much of Minnesota was under 100-150 feet of water. Come see fossilized remains of this ancient ocean. The "brickyards" is one of the best places to look for these fossils in the Twin Cities. Learn about the geological and cultural history of this unique area of St. Paul. For more information, visit the City of St Paul's website. We recommend attendees bringing camp chairs while eating.
We will meet in the parking lot for registration and to enjoy a local/organic "bag" supper from Trotter's Cafe.
$18.00
Explore Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and how you can apply it to your home gardening practices. IPM trainer Kevin Cavanaugh will lead a hands-on tour of St. Paul resident Debbie Meister’s yard. Meister participated in a IPM workshop, had on-site assistance and journaled about her IPM practices during the 2008 growing season. Her yard became a case study for the MN Department of Agriculture and University of MN Extension.
IPM is a balanced approach to pest management, which incorporates the many aspects of plant health care protection in ways that mitigate harmful environmental impacts and protect human health. IPM works on a continuum with level 1 using few if any preventive practices to level 4 being high or biointensive IPM, which relies primarily on preventive practices that limit pest pressure, diversify and build populations of beneficial organism. Pesticides are used only as a last resort and broad-spectrum products are avoided at all times.
Learn about opportunities to help gardeners who have acres of plants, or a 3'x 8' urban balcony garden, or anything in between! Stay after the tour for networking around a backyard fire, weather permitting-bring your own beverage for the bonfire festivities.
A local/organic meal will be provided! $18.00

Learn about how companies are making mass-produced food healthier as well as composting, all while meeting the demands of serving large numbers of clients, on a strict budget, while trying to reduce their carbon footprint. The challenges continue but efforts by individuals and groups are pushing the boundaries of how we think about mass-produced food.

Learn all about this electronic recycling company with a discussion and tour around the Asset Recovery facility. With the number of electronic devices being created each year, this part of the waste stream is growing. Data needs to be destroyed and the hardware in which this information is held needs to be properly managed so it does not enter the environment.
